Traditional views of the atonement tend to be reductive, focusing solely on Jesus's death on the cross. In his 2011 groundbreaking book Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews, David Moffitt challenged that paradigm, showing how the atonement is a fuller process. It involves not only Jesus's death but also his resurrection, ascension, offering, and exaltation. In the succeeding years, Moffitt has continued to expand and clarify his thinking on this issue. Scholars often explain Hebrews' relative silence regarding Jesus' resurrection by emphasizing the author's appeal to Yom Kippur's two key moments-the sacrificial slaughter and the high priest's presentation of blood in the holy of holies-in his distinctive portrayal of Jesus' death and heavenly exaltation. The writer's depiction of Jesus as the high priest whose blood effected ultimate atonement appears to be modeled upon these two moments. Such a typology discourages discrete reflection on Jesus' resurrection. Drawing on contemporary studies of Jewish sacrifice (which note that blood represents life, not death), parallels in Jewish apocalyptic literature, and fresh exegetical insights, this volume demonstrates that Jesus' embodied, resurrected life is crucial for the high-priestly Christology and sacrificial soteriology developed in Hebrews.

Over the last few decades scholarly interest in the Epistle to the Hebrews has experienced something of a renaissance. This volume, which grew out of presentations at the 2011-2013 sessions of the revived Hebrews program unit of the Society of Biblical Literature's International Meeting, is a testament to the still growing interest in this text. The essays deal with a variety of issues in three major portions of Hebrews - chapters 1-2, 8-10, and 13. Each study analyzes an important and often disputed aspect of one of these three sections of Hebrews, aiming to provide fresh insight into how the argument of Hebrews and/or its engagement with its larger religious, social, literary, rhetorical, philosophical, and ethical contexts might be understood.

Stimulated by the signal contributions that New Testament scholar Richard B. Hays has made to Christology and Christian ethics, the essays collected here carry forward conversations involving close studies of particular passages in the Gospels and Epistles and wider-ranging forays into big questions in those fields. Some essays build on Hays's work, pushing forward in new directions on questions of scriptural intertextuality, Christology, and participation in Christ. Others challenge his work on questions of method and substance alike. But all reflect appreciation for the advances made by this giant of twentieth and twenty-first century New Testament scholarship.
